Much has been talked in the press not long ago concerning the bingo industry being hurt as a result of the smoking ban in Britain. Things have grown so bad that in Scotland the Bingo industry has requested massive tax breaks to help keep the businesses afloat. But does the online adaptation of this quintessential game provide a salvation, or might it never compare to its land based kin?
Bingo is an age old game usually enjoyed by the "blue haired" generation. For all that the game recently had seen a recent comeback in popularity with younger members of society deciding to hit the bingo parlors instead of the clubs on a Friday night. This is all about to be destroyed with the enforcement of the anti cigarette law throughout UK.
Players will no longer be allowed to puff on cigarettes while marking off their numbers. Starting in the summer of 2007 all public locations will not be allowed to permit smoking in their venues and this includes Bingo halls, which are possibly the most favored places where people enjoy smoking.
The outcome of the cigarette ban can already be felt in Scotland where smoking is already prohibited in the bingo halls. Players have plummeted and the business is absolutely struggling for to stay alive. But where did all the players go? Of course they haven’t deserted this enduring game?
The answer is online. Gamblers realize that they can play bingo using their computer while enjoying a cocktail and cigarette and still have a chance at big cash rewards. This is a recent development and has happened bordering on perfect with the anti smoking law.
Of course playing on the net is unlikely to replace the collective part of heading down to the bingo parlour, but for a group of players the law has left a good many bingo enthusiasts with little option.
