A lot has been reported in the papers recently concerning the bingo industry struggling as a result of the cigarette ban in Britain. Things have become so poor that in Scotland the Bingo industry has called for huge aid to assist in keeping the industry alive. But will the net variation of this classic game provide a salvation, or will it in no way compare to its real life equivalent?

Bingo is an ancient game normally enjoyed by the "blue haired" generation. For all that the game recently had undergone a recent resurgence in appeal with younger people deciding to hit the bingo halls in place of the discos on a weekend. This is all about to be reversed with the enacting of the smoking ban all over Britain.

Players will no longer be permitted to smoke whilst marking numbers. From the summer of ‘07 all public places will no longer be permitted to allow smoking in their buildings and this includes Bingo halls, which are possibly the most favorite locations where many people like to puff on cigarettes.

The outcome of the cigarette ban can already be seen in Scotland where cigarettes are already not permitted in the bingo parlours. Numbers have plunged and the business is absolutely struggling for its life. But where have all the players gone? Surely they haven’t deserted this enduring game?

The answer is on the internet. People know that they can enjoy bingo in front of their computer while enjoying a drink and fag and still have a chance at monstrous cash rewards. This is a recent development and has timed itself almost perfectly with the ban on smoking.

Of course playing on the internet can never replace the social aspect of heading down to the bingo parlor, but for a demographic of men and women the rules have left a good many bingo players with no option.
