Much has been reported in the press just a while ago about the bingo industry being hurt as a result of the anti cigarette law in England. Things have grown so poor that in Scotland the Bingo industry has demanded huge aid to help keep the industry from going bankrupt. However will the web variation of this traditional game offer a salvation, or might it not compare to its real life peer?
Bingo has been an established game historically played by the "blue rinse" generation. Although the game recently had witnessed a recent return in appeal with younger men and women deciding to go to the bingo halls in place of the bars on a Friday night. This is all about to get flipped on its head with the introduction of the cigarette ban all over UK.
No longer will enthusiasts be permitted to puff on cigarettes whilst marking off their numbers. From the summer of ‘07 all public locations will no longer be permitted to allow smoking in their buildings and this includes Bingo halls, which are possibly the most popular places where folks like to puff on cigarettes.
The effects of the anti smoking law can already be seen in Scotland where cigarettes are already illegal in the bingo parlours. Numbers have plunged and the business is absolutely fighting for its life. But where have all the players gone? Obviously they haven’t deserted this established game?
The answer is on the web. Players know that they can participate in bingo in front of their computer while enjoying a beer and fag and still enjoy massive jackpots. This is a recent anomaly and has timed itself just about perfectly with the anti smoking law.
Of course playing online can never replace the social portion of heading down to the bingo hall, but for a demographic of men and women the rules have left a number of bingo enthusiasts with little alternative.
